Day 4, May 7,Mount Laguna to Sunrise Trailhead, 18 miles(28.9km)
I woke up this morning with my tent covered in snow. I stayed inside my tent till around 8 and packed up all my geat, the wet tent included. I can tell you, my tent is getting really messy. From the first days I collected a fair amount of dust and sand, add some condense each morning and then some slushy snow and you have a nice sticky mixture. When the weather gets better I’m gonna take care of cleaning my home.
After everything was packed I went to the Pine House for some breakfast. When I got there the place was full of hikers. It was still snowing so everyone that was at the campsite the night before found some nice refuge there. Of course talk of the morning was about the weather. Not many were thinking of walking on. Some rented cabins, some went back to the campground and even a few decided to quit the trail and head back home.
I was wondering how tough it would be on trail. I checked my maps and noticed I could go off trail at about 2 miles in would it have been too dangerous. So I took off to check out where all the fuzz was about.
About 2 miles in I had indeed noticed that it was snowing and windy but I felt in the right place and above all feeling strong. I’m happy I listened to my body yesterday and took the day off to get good food in.
After 10 miles I passed a picnic area, Pioneer Mail, but I decided to move on to the Sunrise trailhead another 8 miles further. The trail started zigzagging between sharp rock formations and boulder fields. Even tough it was foggy, it made for very nice walking. The brownish rocks surrounded by green bushes and the white snow around it made my day.
